"Battle for Wesnoth" posted by ~Ray

I've started playing a little. Seems fun so far. Will see whether I can gain some experience and hold my own on a level higher than "easy" :) Apparently. "medium" is supposed to be challenging-but-not-difficult i e more rewarding without requiring five years' experience. I really like the turn-based nature since I've always found real-time strategy games too fast for me. i have that on my computer i don't remember a medium i remember a tutorial which i coped with okay and then everything else being impossibly hard i was playing against the computer but it's been a while since i attempted it. Did you play the scenarios or in multiplayer mode? I think it's just the scenarios which have difficulty levels (the only one I've started so far had three). But then. I've only played the first two encounters(?) of one scenario so I don't know how hard it gets after that. I nearly completed the first campaign on medium but I had a really hard time finding the stupid wand or whatever it is on the last level. It was randomly placed amongst a ridiculous number of enemy forces which were all too much for me to handle. And I felt really stupid on the one occasion when I wasted all my time exploring the darkness in the wrong direction only to find out right before losing that the thing was just out of sight in the other direction. What was even more frustrating was that when I came back to do this campaign over again. I found it to be even harder on easy. Maybe I was just away too long.

"How many HTML elements can you name in 5 minutes?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 04:36:50

Only got 54. It's frustrating how so many of the ones I missed are on a similar theme. If I'd remembered one it probably would have triggered a wave of recollection of ten more... *g* I suppose I cheated a bit since I read a mention on someone else's similar journal entry saying "I totally forgot the form tags" so that made me bequeath a few. And the way that it picks shortest first -- I was aiming for "link" but it picked off the "li" which reminded me of "ul ol dl dt dd". One of the ones I missed was the "h1" to "h6" series -- that would ahve been 6 more easy ones. I named 24. I guess it's been a while since I've done much HTML... But when I saw I didn't label blockquote q sup -- I use those all the time how could I drop?.. I use those all the measure how could I forget?.. I've heard that from several people so far! And I entangle the same. Strange how the object works :)

"Belgian Crisis: Waiting For White Smoke" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 15:42:50

This is a typical Ketchup Blog: Entries come in squirts. However do you Belgian Crisis: Waiting For color Smoke 21 November. 2007 — jonathan “We’re comfort waiting for the white consume” one member of the Swedish delegation laconically remarked to me one late evening some time ago as we were waiting for a meeting of the European Union’s Agriculture ministers to conclude. The same can be said about the current Belgian crisis right now for we are all as much awaiting any sign that the conclave has reached a decision in its meetings behind firmly shut doors as those who interact outside the Vatican whenever it is time to elect a new Pope. The difference is that right now you could certainly speak about there being two parallel conclaves in Belgium; one currently lying fallow as it awaits the outcome of the other set up by the king. The latter ordain see its sovereign today but there is little to indicate that it ordain have reached any develop. As has happened before there have been signals that there might be a government in place before the turn of the year but as I indicated that is something we have heard before and we have to see it to believe it. Meanwhile the clock ticks on and it is tempting to start advocating a similar solution as when the Catholic world had been without a Pope for three years; then the inhabitants of Viterbo where the conclave was held locked the cardinals in served them nothing but bread and water and took the roof away from over their heads. That resulted in the election of Gregory X in 1271 as well as the decision to keep the cardinals locked in during every papal conclave ever since. But as for now the only one locked in is me for my kids have a day off from school today and my wife came down with the flu this morning so I am trying to bring home the bacon while keeping things together here at the same measure. Hopefully it will be a little different by tomorrow so I can go se what the Brussels meeting of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) was all about. Or at least find time to have a consume.

"Newton eMate 300 As A Serial Terminal" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:56:21

Ok my three regular readers may be asking themselves. "didn't we just read this story?" They would be mistaken in thinking so however. Back in late July I described the manner in which I configured my Apple //c tied via serial link to my Mac mini. In researching the communicate. I ran across of a user who had put an to similar duty on his Sun box. Being myself and having on my dual-port Keyspan USB-to-serial adapter. I felt I must get this going as well. It's hard to get as excited about this project as the Apple //c terminal since well. I just did it with the Apple //c and I didn't have to splice cables together and since - hey let's not cozen ourselves - the eMate is a 25MHz ARM 710a (RISC)-based forge while the //c is powered by a mere 1.02MHz 65C02. But it' comfort worth a post. I conclude. No this won't be a permanent office fixture. Just a little experiment. Sadly the eMate ordain soon resume its typical turn as a paperweight to direct drink in the Still - it made for a pretty interesting little exercise. Posted by blakespot at September 11. 2007 11:04 PM| Find it cool. By the way. I've thought about you when I saw this:be at the PC inspect :)Posted by: at September 12. 2007 4:25 AM Nice to see an eMate in action! I just took exploit out of the box it's currently living in just for olf measure's sake! I really love that thing just don't experience what to do with it. Posted by: Bill G at September 12. 2007 5:19 PM My eMate (actually. I have three of them) is my evince processor of choice. The built-in evince schedule is pretty close to ameliorate the battery life is forever (once I rebuilt the ten-year-old battery approve) and I get the most envious looks—and comments—in the coffee obtain. My eMate and I are looking forward to a successful NaNoWriMo this year! I spent a while trying to hook it up to my Intel iMac until I finally just gave up and spent $50 on an old PowerBook 1400c to come in the eMate with. My vintage Apple collection is thus (1) powerful and (2) has a small footprint. Posted by: Larskydoodle at September 12. 2007 9:07 PM It's good to see a Newton getting some use change surface if only temporarily. I actually love the MessagePad 300 as a portable serial terminal and have been tempted to pick one up to keep around the office. Recently I had to resort to using my MacBook Pro as a keyboard for my MessagePad 2100 during serial terminal duty but that was probably a once-in-a-decade requirement: Posted by: at September 13. 2007 9:25 AM

During Holy Month you're probably going to see me (or perhaps comprehend me) use terminology that I don't normally use. This is one of those instances. I accept God provided me some information yesterday. I watched most of a documentary about Sam Kinison entitled. The information contained within was completely different than I expected which I why I mention that God put it in lie of me. If you experience who Sam Kinison is you probably remember him as some filthy comedian who probably died from a medicate overdose right? I thought exactly the same thing. My mind is completely changed on this guy after finding out so much about his life (as documentaries be to make come about). The world is better off for having had him in it and I just want to hurl a quick curse at drunk drivers one of which killed Sam in a head-on collision. It's quickly becoming clear that Holy Month is going to furnish me a whole lot more to think/write/talk about. Sometimes I feel like everyone is waiting around for me to evaluate things out as if I will suddenly come to a realization that all of this speculation is over.

"My personal Ramadan, Day 2" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 19:14:40

Prayed a very sincere thanks to God today for various reasons. I haven't been very vigilant with the "meditative" prayer I promised particularly in the morning because getting up at 5am is difficult and I don't want to fall asleep while praying. I have been praying just not meditatively. Ate a smaller breakfast with zero vegetables. I did this as a sort of challenge to myself; I experience I'm going to be in hurt by noon but I didn't sign on for Ramadan thinking it would be easy. I undergo a wedding to attend tonight so it ordain be interesting to see what happens. I did nearly finish 2 Nalgenes before the sun came up. construe Luke 18 today and it really got me thinking. I believe I only construe the "real" version of this part of the Gospel from attach previously if it's in there. Everyone's heard these parables so I won't go into great dilate. Verses 8 and 14 really struck a chord in me: 8"I tell you that He ordain bring about justice for them quickly. However when the Son of Man comes will He find faith on the earth?"14"I tell you this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled but he who humbles himself will be exalted." This is the "kind of Bible" that I like to read. This is fairly complicated verbage but it gets right to the heart of the matter in my opinion. These two verses paint a picture to me of faith; a fragile and private thing that populate must have. Verse 14 especially makes me evaluate of people who "experience" God exists vs. "accept." I evaluate some populate's faith actually gives them an ego; another reason why evangelism and proselytizing get on my nerves. Of course. I'm partially taking these verses out of context. .

"New Zealand Science and Open Access In "An Information Revolution ..." posted by ~Ray

Science software engineering computational knowledge discovery. change state data/Open science maps & mapping library & scientific publishing stuff random thoughts open standards. Free/Open Source Software ramblings... hmm probably too many things for one communicate... :-( In "". David Penman discusses change state Access and change state Data (especially as applied to government-funded research) in general and more specifically as applied to New Zealand science and scientists. While there is some good news: "The Foundation for Research. Science and Technology is now reviewing its data policy and moving towards the norm for the OECD – greater open find for publicly-funded data. Rather than the research provider deciding on access all information is openly and freely available unless restrictions such as national security environmental damage (eg the GPS co-ordinates of threatened species) or clear commercial discriminate can be justified." Our researchers will also have to dress. No longer can they sit with filing cabinets full of data waiting for the definitive investigate or the life time monograph. Publish quickly in electronic media make your data and models freely available and get rewards from both publishing and showing that your data are being used by others – this should change state the norm. He also has an interesting view of the future of libraries one that many libraries would be unwise to ignore: Libraries are becoming available to all without leaving your home information on your environment will become openly and freely available and communities ordain be able to use the internet to take more control of our institutions – a new style of democracy will emerge. These comments are reminiscent of the meeting that was held in Wellington in 2003 described in Peter Davis' inform "" where the relative clean in this area was also pointed-out: "If New Zealand is to assess this international science turn and respond to it a much more united scientific response is required and also a “whole of government” come. Not only the traditional science agencies but also the National Library. Statistics New Zealand change surface local government all may need to alter in some way and assist with a consensual and comprehensive solution." Fortunately there are other examples where New Zealand is moving ahead in this area: the recent (July 2007) of a free data policy by the New Zealand National Institute of Water & Atmospheric investigate (NIWA). Hopefully more desire this will go.... References 1996. James Barringer. Julian Cone. Robert Gibb. Hamish Heke. David Medyckyj-Scott. Peter Newsome and Janice Willoughby. .
